“That was nicer than usual,” Isabelle said, rolling her eyes.

“Forget about him. I really do want to introduce you to an old friend.”

Frank let her lead him across the room. He recognized Christophe

Roca, Dany"s former co-driver. Isabelle embraced Christophe, kissing

both his cheeks before introducing Frank.

“Nice to meet you, sir,” Frank said, offering his hand. “I was a

fan of yours for years. What brings you to Jordan?”

Christophe laughed. “I retired here, believe it or not. It"s beautiful

country, and I fell in love with it when we first raced here. You and

Daniel had an impressive first race a few weeks ago.”

“Thank you,” Frank said. “It"s always a little disappointing not to

win, but we were pleased with the overall results.”

“You can"t win them all,” Christophe said, “but it looked to me

like Daniel"s driving was steadier than I"ve ever seen it, so whatever

you two are doing, it"s obviously working.”

“We do seem to make a good team,” Frank agreed, “although at

the moment, he"s annoying me.”

“Take Frank for a walk,” Isabelle told Christophe, “and explain

my brother to him.”

“What exactly am I supposed to explain?” Christophe said with a

laugh.

Isabelle tilted her head toward where Dany was leading a woman

off the dance floor. “Why that”—her scowl deepened when Dany and

the woman left—“will never be a threat to him.”

“Ah,” Christophe said with a sage nod. “I think I see the problem.

Shall we take a stroll? The temperature cools off in the evenings, and

you may prefer not to have our conversation overheard.”

Frank nodded, not sure what else to say. He"d gotten used to

Isabelle"s blunt speech, but he didn"t know Christophe except by

reputation. Isabelle obviously trusted him, or she wouldn"t have been as

blunt as she was, especially not here. He"d seen her with the mechanics

from other teams. She could be cagey when she needed to be.

They found a table on the patio outside the club, taking seats side

by side. Christophe pulled out a cigarette and offered one to Frank, but

Frank shook his head. “Do you mind if I do?”
